Description

Dry-type or air-cooled power transformers are electrical devices used to transfer electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction. These transformers do not use any liquid for cooling; instead, they rely on air to dissipate heat. The coils in dry-type transformers are separated by air, and the transformer's enclosure is ventilated to allow airflow, which helps in cooling the windings.

Working Principle

Dry-type transformers operate on the principle of electromagnetic induction, where electrical energy is transferred between circuits through a magnetic field. The primary and secondary coils are magnetically linked but not electrically connected. When alternating current flows through the primary coil, it creates a varying magnetic field, which induces a voltage in the secondary coil. This process allows the transformer to step up or step down voltage levels as needed. Dry-type transformers are particularly useful because they do not require oil for cooling, reducing the risk of fire hazards and environmental contamination.

Applications

Dry-type transformers are commonly used in environments where fire safety is a concern, such as in buildings, underground substations, and offshore platforms. They are also used in industrial applications where oil-filled transformers pose a risk of contamination. Specific examples include use in hospitals, schools, and commercial buildings where safety and environmental considerations are paramount.

Advantages over other Power Transformers

Dry-type transformers offer several advantages over oil-filled transformers. They eliminate the risk of oil leaks and associated environmental hazards. Additionally, they are more fire-resistant, making them suitable for indoor installations where safety is a priority. The absence of oil also reduces maintenance requirements and costs associated with oil handling and disposal.

Limitations

One limitation of dry-type transformers is their lower power rating compared to oil-filled transformers. Historically, their rating was limited to less than 1 MVA, although advancements in technology have increased this to 20 MVA. However, they may still not be suitable for very high-power applications. Additionally, dry-type transformers can be more expensive initially due to the materials and construction techniques used to ensure adequate cooling and insulation.

Considerations

When considering dry-type transformers, it is important to evaluate the initial costs, which can be higher than oil-filled transformers. However, the operating expenses may be lower due to reduced maintenance needs and the absence of oil handling. Dry-type transformers are durable and offer high reliability, but their efficiency can be slightly lower than oil-filled transformers, which may affect long-term operating costs. Replacement and maintenance costs are generally lower, as there is no need for oil testing or replacement.
