Visible Optical Lenses

Description

Visible optical lenses are transparent components designed to manipulate light in the visible spectrum. They are crafted from optical-quality materials and are curved to either converge or diverge light rays. These lenses are essential in forming images by focusing light onto a sensor or detector, magnifying or reducing the size of an object, and enhancing the clarity of the image.

Working Principle

Visible optical lenses operate by refracting or bending light to form images of objects. The curvature of the lens determines how light is bent, allowing the lens to focus light onto a specific point. This process is crucial for image formation, as it enables the lens to magnify or reduce the size of an object and focus light onto a sensor or detector. The ability to manipulate light in this way makes visible optical lenses invaluable in various optical systems, enhancing their performance and accuracy.

Applications

Visible optical lenses are used in a wide range of applications. For instance, they are integral to digital cameras and smartphones, where they focus light onto image sensors to capture clear and detailed photographs. In the field of security monitoring, these lenses are used in surveillance cameras to provide high-resolution images for effective monitoring. Additionally, visible optical lenses are employed in automotive imaging systems, where they assist in capturing images for driver assistance technologies.

Advantages over other Optical Lenses

Visible optical lenses offer several advantages over other types of lenses. For example, gradient index (GRIN) lenses, a type of visible optical lens, are cost-effective and simple to employ due to their ability to gradually bend light within the lens plane. This gradual bending allows for precise manufacturing and flexibility in fitting application parameters, making them highly adaptable for various uses.

Limitations

One limitation of visible optical lenses is the occurrence of chromatic aberration. This phenomenon arises because the refractive index of light varies with wavelength, causing light of different wavelengths emitted from the same point to not converge into a single point when imaging. This results in color fringing and reduced image clarity, particularly when there is a large wavelength span.

Considerations

When selecting visible optical lenses, several considerations should be taken into account. Initial costs can vary depending on the complexity and quality of the lens design. Operating expenses may include maintenance and potential replacement costs, especially if the lenses are used in harsh environments. Durability is another factor, as lenses made from high-quality materials tend to have a longer lifespan. Accuracy in image formation is crucial, and lenses should be chosen based on their ability to minimize aberrations and distortions. Finally, replacement and maintenance costs should be considered, as these can impact the overall cost-effectiveness of the optical system.

Manually Focus Variable Lens -- ML-20-35
from Qioptiq

An infinite number of lenses in just one lens: ML-20-35 is a shape-changing polymer lens. The spherical curvature of this lens with an aperture of 20 mm can be changed manually by rotating an adjustment ring. The focal length can be changed from positive (plano-convex) to infinity (flat) to negative... [See More]

Plano Concave Lens -- L-PCC006
from Ross Optical Industries

These lenses have one flat surface and one concave surface. They have a negative focal length and are used to diverge incoming light, or to increase focal length in an existing optical system. They can be used in beam expanders and projection systems. [See More]

Precision Aplanats -- L-APA003
from Ross Optical Industries

These Achromats are not only corrected for spherical aberration and axial color as the standard Achromats but also corrected for coma. This combination makes them Aplanatic in nature and allows for better optical performance. They are used as laser focusing objectives and in electro-optical and... [See More]

Steinheil Triplets -- L-AST001
from Ross Optical Industries

The Steinheil triplets are made of a low index crown element cemented in between two identical meniscus flint elements. Specially designed for 1:1 conjugation, they perform well for conjugate ratios up to 5. These lenses make good relay optics for both on- and off-axis application and are often used... [See More]
