Exercise Workbook for Advanced AutoCAD 2005

Lesson 11

EXTERNAL REFERENCE DRAWINGS (xref)

The XREF command is used to insert an image of another drawing into the current drawing. This command is very similar to the INSERT command. But when you externally reference (XREF) drawing A into drawing B , the image of drawing A appears but only the path to where the original drawing A is stored is loaded into drawing B . Drawing A does not become a permanent part of drawing B .

Each time you open drawing B , it will look for drawing A (via the path) and will load the image of the current version of drawing A . If drawing A has been changed, the new changed version will be displayed. So drawing B will always display the most current version of drawing A .

Since only the path information of drawing A is stored in drawing B , the amount of data in drawing B does not increase. This is a great advantage.

If you want drawing A to actually become part of drawing B , you can BIND A to B . (Refer to page 11 6)

If you want the image of drawing A to disappear temporarily, you can UNLOAD it. To make it reappear simply RELOAD it. (Refer to page 11 5 & 6)

If you want to delete the image and the path to drawing A , you can DETACH it. (Refer to page 11 5)

Examples of how the XREF command could be useful?

  1. If you need to draw an elevation.
