Polyethylene Polymers and Plastic Resins
Polyethylene is a lightweight and durable thermoplastic that has a different crystalline structure. Today, it is one of the most widely used plastics in the world. It is a polymer that is made from the polymerization of ethylene and belongs to the family of polyolefin resins. It can be changed to take on the elastic properties of rubber. Many different types of polyethylene are available which are a combination of similar polymers of ethylene. Although polyethylene has low strength and rigidity, it has higher ductility and impact strength. It has a wax-like feel when it is touched physically. Plastic resins are a family of similar materials with different properties that are created by heating hydrocarbons in a process referred to as a “cracking process.” The main objective of this cracking process is to decompose larger molecules into ethylene or propylene. Plastic resins are also used in many products. The success of the product depends on selecting the right plastic resin for the product.
The physical properties of polyethylene and polypropylene polymers are quite similar. However, they still have some differences between them. Unlike polyethylene that is crystal clear, polypropylene is translucent like a milk jug. Polyethylene has a lower melting point, whereas polypropylene has a higher melting point. Polyethylene can withstand colder temperatures better and is also sturdier than polypropylene.

Applications
Tens of millions of tons of polyethylene polymers are produced annually because of their uses in various industries. In the packaging industry, polyethylene is used in many packaging applications such as crates, bottles, fruit juice and milk caps, and industrial bulk containers. In many household goods like housewares and garbage containers, these polymers are used because of their low cost and easy processability. Polyethylene is also used in pipes and fittings, fuel tanks in vehicles, wirings, and cables because it is chemical and hydrolysis resistant. It is also employed in an array of thermoplastic processing techniques and is especially useful in moisture-resistant and low-cost applications. Hence, it is used to manufacture glass-reinforced bodies of cars. Moreover, polyethylene also has uses in medical devices and sanitary packaging. Polyethylene packaging can be heat sealed. The heat-sealed packaging provides excellent sterilization as it protects from germs and moisture.
