Permanent Magnet DC Motors
The permanent magnet DC motor uses a permanent magnet or pair of magnets to offer the magnetic field against which the rotor field produces torque. The strength of the magnetic field is fixed in this type of motor, and it cannot be increased using external factors. There is no field winding on the stator frame. The principle behind these motors is that the conductor would face the magnetic force whenever it is placed inside the magnetic field. The motion of the conductor can be predicted by using Fleming’s Left Hand Rule. According to the Fleming Left Hand Rule, if we hold our left hand such that thumb, middle finger, and index finger are at right angles to each other, the thumb will show the direction of the force on the conductor, the middle finger will show the direction of current and the index finger will be lined up with the magnetic field.
There are generally four types of DC motors available: permanent magnet DC motor, series DC motor, shunt DC motors and compound DC motors. Unlike a permanent DC motor, a series DC motor has field and armature circuits connected in a chain and the field has a large wire carrying current. These motors produce high initial torque but cannot deal with varying speeds and get damaged if there is no load. In shunt motors, the field is connected in shunt (Parallel) with the armature so the shunt field can be excited separately with the motors being offered stable speeds. Compound DC motor, as the name suggests, has the characteristics of both series DC motor and shunt DC motor as it has a separately excited shunt field as well as a field connected in series with the armature.
