Planning Using Primavera Project Planner P3 Version 3.1 Revised 2006

A resource may be defined as something or someone that is assigned to an activity and is required to complete the task. This includes people or groups of people, materials, plant, access and money.
It is recommended that you create and assign the minimum number of resources to activities. Avoid cluttering the schedule with resources that are in plentiful supply or are of little importance.
The following steps are followed to create and use resources in a P3 schedule:
Create your resources in the Resource Dictionary.
Assign the resources to activities.
Manipulate the resource calendar if resources have special timing requirements.
This chapter will cover these steps for creating and assigning resources to activities.
Before we start we will define some terminology:
Driving Resource. When a Driving Resource is assigned to an activity it will determine the duration of an activity and over ride the duration entered in the Task form. When there is more than one Driving Resource then the Duration of the longest resource will determine the length of the Activity.
Non-driving Resource. When a Non-driving Resource is assigned to an activity, it has no effect on the duration entered in the Task form.
Important Driving Resources add an extra level of complexity to the schedule that is often not required. It is therefore recommended that all resources are entered as Non-driving unless scheduling requirements dictate that Driving resources are required.
