Planning Using Primavera Project Planner P3 Version 3.1 Revised 2006

Chapter 18: Using Activity Types and Driving Resources

Overview

There are nine Activity Types in P3. Activity Types exist to enable the scheduler to simulate real life situations more closely. Activity Types have their own rules for calculation and should be completely understood by the user before they are used.

Some Activity Types have restrictions on the constraints that may be applied to them. For example, a Finish Milestone may not have a Start Date constraint.

The Activity Types are titled as follows:

  • Task

  • Independent

  • Meeting

  • Start Milestone

  • Finish Milestone

  • Start Flag

  • Finish Flag

  • Hammock

  • WBS

  • Topic

This chapter covers the creation and use of all these activity types.

SureTrak supports Topic Activity Types. These may not be created in P3 but when you open a SureTrak project or import a MPX format project, the Topic activities are visible in P3. These activities may be deleted but not promoted or demoted or have their Task type changed in P3.

18.1 Assigning an Activity Type to an Activity

Activity Types may assigned by:

  • Selecting from the Act. Type drop down box in the Activity Form or typing in the first letter in the box.

  • Displaying a column with Activity Type and updating the column.

18.2 Task

Use this for scheduling normal activities. This Activity Type always utilizes the calendar assigned in the Activity Form for calculation of dates and durations.

When an activity is nominated as a Task, the Resource ignores its Resource Calendar; irrespective of whether the Resource is Non Driving or Driving.
