Servo Valves Control Valves
A servo control valve is a device used to control fluid flow. This type of valve directs and controls the velocity of fluid flow. They also regulate the pressure created by fluid flow. They are common in pipe systems and actuators that require a high-performance device for controlling fluid flow.
The operation of servo valves is similar to other valves; the fluid passing through the system is responsible for the valve movement. However, a servo control valve differs from all other valves with its method of control. These valves control the fluid flow by transferring a low-powered electrical signal using a digital control panel. Their mode of operation and control make them operate with high accuracy, low repeatability and high-frequency response.
Servo control valves come in single, two-stage, and three-stage designs. They are incorporated with electromagnetic torque motors or solenoids. They may also use jet pipe valves, spool valves, flapper valves, or some other type of hydraulic control element. Nevertheless, all servo valves are essentially the same in function.
A common servo valve design is the two-stage nozzle-flapper valve with mechanical feedback. The first stage of the servo valve is a flapper-nozzle valve controlled by an electromagnetic torque motor. The second stage is made up of a four-way spool valve. The low-powered electric signal causes an electromagnetic force to act on both sides of the flapper. This force causes the flapper to move, thereby varying the nozzle opening and the system’s pressure.
Specification
- Temperature range: describes the fluid temperature suitable for the servo control valve.
- Supply pressure: describes the suitable system pressure for which the valve is designed to operate. Supply pressure for servo valves is often specified together with the return line pressure.
- Fluid: describes the working fluid that the servo control valve is designed to handle.
- Lifespan: describes the number of hours the valve will remain in normal operation. The useful life of servo control valves is influenced by fluid contamination, operating conditions, and magnitude of pressure overload.
Applications
Servo control valves are used for regulating the flow of fuel in aircraft engines. They are also used in the manufacture of hollow plastics. Here, servo valves control the wall thickness of extruded plastics in the blow molding process. Servo valves are also used in hydroelectric power plants to regulate fluid flow.
