Radial Ball Bearing Courtesy of GlobalSpec, Inc.
|
Radial, or deep groove bearings, can take radial and axial loads to varying degrees but are used when the primary load is in the radial direction. They consist of an inner ring, an outer ring, balls and sometimes a cage to contain and separate the balls.
Angular Contact Ball Bearing Courtesy of GlobalSpec, Inc.
|
Angular contact bearings are designed such that a contact angle between the races and the balls is formed when the bearing is in use. The major design characteristic of this type of bearing is that one or both of the ring races have one shoulder higher than the other. In order for these bearings to function properly, they must be assembled with a thrust load. This loading (or preload) creates a line of contact (or contact angle) between the inner race, the ball and the outer race. The preload can be built in to the bearing or created when the bearing is inserted into an assembly. The contact angle varies from 15° to 40° and is measured relative to a line running perpendicular to the bearing axis. Angular contact bearings are one-directional thrust bearings that can withstand heavy thrust loads and moderate radial loads.

Thrust ball bearings are designed for pure thrust loads. These bearings can handle little or no radial loads. The rolling element can be a ball, needle or roller.

Bore Size | The bearing industry uses a standard numbering system for bearings with metric-diameter bores. If the bore is hexagonal, enter the dimension across the flats. If the bore is tapered, enter the smaller diameter. For bore sizes 04 and up, multiply the bore size by 5 to identify the bore diameter in millimeters (mm). Refer to the table below.

Special Material / Plating Options
Your choices are... | |||
Stainless Steel | Stainless steel is chemical and corrosion resistant and can have relatively high pressure ratings.
Plastic | Any of numerous organic, synthetic or processed materials that are mostly thermoplastic or thermosetting polymers of high molecular weight and that can be made into objects, films, or filaments.
Ceramic Balls | A ceramic hybrid bearing is constructed of steel inner and outer rings with ceramic (typically Si3N4) balls in place of steel. These bearings have several advantages over all steel bearings, such as higher speed and acceleration capability, increased stiffness, higher accuracy, lower friction and heat generation, reduced lubrication requirements, low thermal expansion and extended operating life. Bearings containing all ceramic balls are also nonconductive and are commonly used in electric motor applications.
Ceramic Races | Bearing races are constructed of ceramic (typically Si3N4).
Plated | Bearing is plated; common plating materials are cadmium and chrome.

Special Application | |||
Your choices are... | |||
Airframe / Aircraft Control | Aircraft control and airframe bearings are especially designed to meet the demands of aerospace applications. They can be of ball, roller or needle roller construction. Most aircraft control and airframe bearings are manufactured to U.S. government military (MIL-SPEC) standards.
Aerospace | Bearings designed for aerospace applications such as jet engines and helicopters.
Agriculture | Bearings designed for agriculture equipment and environments.
Automotive | Bearings designed for the automotive industry.
Ball Screw Support | These bearings are specifically designed for use in ball screw or lead screw applications. Most ball screw support bearings are angular contact bearings with a steep contact angle, such as 60°, and are available in duplex, triplex and quadruplex configurations. Other designs include bearings containing separate thrust and radial roller bearings in a single assembly. Cartridge designs are also available that include a housing, seals and bearings.
Instrument / Miniature | Instrument and miniature bearings are small deep groove or angular contact bearings. They are used in applications requiring very small bearings, such as dental drills and computer disk drives.
Medical /Dental | Bearings specially designed for medical or dental equipment.
Military | Bearing manufactured in accordance with the U.S. government standards, as dictated by the appropriate military specifications.
Pump | These bearings are designed for the conditions found in pumps, including high loads, poor or degraded lubrication and high operating temperatures.
Spindle / Super Precision | These are high precision bearings intended for use in machine tool spindles.
Sporting and Consumer Goods | Bearings designed for the sporting and consumer goods market. Products in the sector include inline skates, skateboards and fishing reels.
Other | Other, unlisted application.

Bearing Class | Many organizations have developed standards, including the American Bearing Manufacturers Association (ABMA), International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN). ABEC and RBEC standards are defined by ABMA Standard 20. Similar standards are defined by ISO 492, JIS B1514 and DIN 620. ABEC bearing ratings were established by the Annular Bearing Engineering Committee (ABEC) of the American Bearing Manufacturers Association (ABMA). There are five classes of bearings in the ABEC rating system - 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9. The higher the ABEC rating, the tighter the tolerances and the higher the bearing precision. ABEC 1 bearings are designed for use in lower speed and accuracy applications. RBEC bearing ratings were established by the Roller Bearing Engineering Committee (RBEC) of the American Bearing Manufacturers Association (ABMA). There are five classes of bearings in the RBEC rating system - 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9. The higher the RBEC rating, the tighter the tolerances and the higher the bearing precision. RBEC ratings apply to cylindrical roller and spherical roller bearings. RBEC 1 bearings are designed for use in lower speed and accuracy applications. Although the specifications may differ slightly, the following equivalency can be made between ABMA, ISO and DIN bearing classes. ANSI Standard 20 / ISO 492 / DIN 620 ABEC 1 / Class Normal / P0 ABEC 3 / Class 6 / P6 ABEC 5 / Class 5 / P5 ABEC 7 / Class 4 / P4 ABEC 9 / Class 2 / P2
