Nickel / Nickel Alloy (UNS N) Nonferrous Metals and Alloys

Description

Nickel and nickel alloys are non-ferrous metals known for their high strength and toughness. They exhibit excellent corrosion resistance and superior properties at elevated temperatures. These alloys are composed of nickel as the primary element, often combined with other elements such as chromium, copper, and iron to enhance specific properties.

Working Principle

Nickel alloys work by leveraging the inherent properties of nickel, which include high melting points and resistance to oxidation and corrosion. The addition of other elements like chromium and copper can further enhance these properties, making the alloys suitable for high-temperature and corrosive environments. The controlled thermal expansion properties of certain nickel alloys make them useful in applications where dimensional stability is crucial over a range of temperatures.

Applications

Nickel copper alloys are particularly useful in applications where magnetic permeability is a concern, such as oncology systems and shielding electrical sensors in well logging. Nickel iron alloys are used in precision springs and glass seals due to their low and constant thermal expansion coefficient. Other specific applications include rotating inertia members used near guidance systems and resistive heating elements that require high resistivity and good oxidation properties.

Advantages over other Nonferrous Metals and Alloys

Nickel alloys offer several advantages over other nonferrous metals, including their high strength and toughness, excellent corrosion resistance, and superior performance at elevated temperatures. For example, nickel copper alloys are preferred in applications requiring non-magnetic properties, while nickel iron alloys are chosen for their stable mechanical properties across temperature changes.

Limitations

One limitation of nickel alloys is the introduction of copper, which can result in lower tensile strength and ductility. Additionally, the cost of nickel and its alloys can be higher compared to other nonferrous metals, which may impact their selection for cost-sensitive applications.

Considerations

When selecting nickel alloys, considerations should include initial costs, as these materials can be more expensive than other nonferrous metals. Operating expenses may also be higher due to the need for specialized processing and handling. However, the durability and resistance to harsh environments can offset these costs by reducing the need for frequent replacements and maintenance. The accuracy of components made from nickel alloys can be maintained over a wide range of temperatures, which is a critical factor in precision applications.
