Technical jargon helps engineers to differentiate betwen engineers and normal people.
One great way that heps us do this is to use really obscure terminology. Preferably, the terminology should feature different words to mean basically the same thing. A great example - sensor, transducer, encoder, transmitter, detector, measuring thingy.....you get the picture.
