Standard systems require a terminator at the beginning and end of the SCSI chain. It is important to note that many manufacturers provide on-board termination, via a series of resistor packs on the controller card or device. The terminators are mainly used as a 'damper' to reduce noise and chatter by keeping signals from bouncing off one end of the cable and rippling back and interfering with new messages.

There are many different types of terminator circuits. The main five are:

  • Passive (also know as single-ended)
  • Active (also known as regulated)
  • Active Negation
  • Differential
  • Differential LVD

Some of the types listed below are not ANSI approved styles, each offering a unique way to eliminate potential data errors/faults on the SCSI bus.

  • SLICK
  • FPT Forced Perfect Termination
